Norma McCarthy Obituary

Norma Theresa (Farrell) McCarthy, 92, of Newington, passed away on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at Hartford Hospital after a brief illness.  Born June 29, 1927 in New Britain, Connecticut, she was the daughter of the late James Michael and Mary Elizabeth (McIntyre) Farrell.  Norma attended Saint Joseph School in New Britain and graduated from New Britain Senior High School Class of 1945.  Norma worked in several landmark New Britain, Connecticut institutions including Grant’s Department Store; Landers, Frary & Clark; and the Emhart Corporation. 

She was the devoted wife of the late John (Jack) McCarthy formerly of Newport, RI.  The loving couple enjoyed traveling and cited Cuba and Bermuda as two of their favorite trips.  Norma was a faithful Catholic who attended Mass daily at St. Joseph Church her parish since childhood.  Norma was known for her great sense of humor and love of Irish culture.  A life-long resident of New Britain, Norma lived in the South Main Street School II Apartments for over twenty years until her residence at the Jefferson House since 2015.  Due to her great love of cats, Norma was often found behind School II feeding the neighborhood felines. 

Norma is survived by many nieces and nephews including:  Norma Kivney of West Hartford, CT; Roger Bergeson of East Berlin, CT; Harry Whiteley Jr. of Fairfield, CT; James Whiteley of Norwalk, CT; Jeffrey Whiteley of Norwalk, CT; Sandra Saalborn of New Fairfield, CT; Kathleen O’Connor of Branford, CT; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband John; sisters: Dorothy Bergeson of Newington, CT; Elizabeth Rinaldi of West Hartford, Joan Whiteley of Stamford, CT; and brothers Richard Farrell of Branford; and Donald Farrell who died in infancy.

There will be no calling hours, but a Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the Parish of the Annunciation (Church of the Holy Spirit, 183 Church St., Newington, CT). Burial to follow at St. Mary Cemetery, 1309 Stanley St., New Britain, CT.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Norma's memory may be made to The Divine Providence (St. Joseph Church, 195 South Main St., New Britain, CT 06051).
