Ruth Kopcyk Obituary

Ruth Irene (Jahn) Kopcyk, 82, passed away peacefully May 5, 2018. Born In Glogau, Germany to the late Alfred and Irene (Dultze) Jahn, she was a long time resident of New Britain and of Avery Heights, Hartford.

She was predeceased by her loving husband of 33 years, John Kopcyk. She was also predeceased by her brother Reinhard Jahn, and her brother-in-law, George Streib.  Ruth leaves behind her sons, John A. Kopcyk and his wife Veronica of Southington, CT, Edward W. Kopcyk of Clearwater, FL; her daughters, Danielle R. Devereaux and her husband Lee Blaede of Daufuskie Island, SC, and Patricia C. Trovato and her husband John of Southington, CT; her brother Manfred Jahn and his wife Anne-Rose of Saarlouis, Germany; and sisters Waltraud Streib of New Britain, CT, and Ursula Coe and her husband Tyler of Berlin, CT. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Thomas Kopcyk, Mark Kopcyk, Kathy Ebert, Nicholas Kopcyk, Alexander Kopcyk, Troy Trovato, Christina Trovato, and many loving nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.

Ruth worked as a school crossing guard in New Britain while her children were at home.  She also worked for many years at Emhart Hardware/Black & Decker in Berlin, CT.  Ruth had always been drawn to creative endeavors, including gardening, knitting, crocheting, singing and painting on and off until illness forced her to stop in 1995.  In 2008 she was inspired by her friend Brian Colbath, an oil painting instructor at Avery Heights to take up her brush again, overcoming the limits to her manual dexterity left by the effects of Guillain-Barre Syndrome.  Her strength and determination to overcome the greatest odds were a source of inspiration to all who knew her.  Ruth especially loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She was so proud of them and they brought her much joy. The family wishes to thank everyone at Avery Heights, especially Jodi Levine for her loving support, and the many nurses and aides that cared for mom over the last twelve years.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Thursday, May 10, 2018 from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Luddy-Peterson Funeral Home, 205 S.
