Carl Joseph Russo

June 18, 1949- November 15, 2025

Carl J Russo, age 76, was born in Waltham Massachusetts as first son to Benjamin Russo AKA Biago Felice Russo and Mary Frances Russo (nee Piccolo) on June 18, 1949.  He is survived by his wife Aichu Li; His sisters Ms. Julie Gorgone and Ms. Paula Regan-Russo.

He attended St. Joseph’s elementary school, and St. Mary’s high school, where he graduated in 1967.  After high school he attended Boston University and received a BA with distinction in Physics in 1971.  After an additional year of physics courses, he transferred to MIT’s department of Material Science and Engineering in 1972, and received a PhD in surface physics in 1977, with a minor in electronic instrumentation. 

After graduation he worked for General Ionex Corporation on the Tandetron accelerator used for Mass and Charge Spectroscopy, and carbon 14 dating from 1977-1980.  Subsequently, he worked for Varian Associates Extrion Division from 1980-1989, developing rapid thermal processing and reactive ion etch equipment.  In 1988 he moved to American Superconductor Corp. as Director of Advanced Technology and Business Development and stayed through 1997.  In 1998 he moved to Novellus Systems as Product General Manager for Copper. In 2001 he founded Process Science Associates where he consulted for startup companies until his death.

Carl passed away peacefully on November 15, 2025, at the Yale New Haven Hospital, New Haven, Connecticut, surrounded by his loving wife and sister. Carl was active as a bicyclist, cook, wine collector, gardener, organist, and world traveler.

Carl's memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 25th at 12pm at the Luddy & Peterson's Funeral home, 205 South Main Street, New Britain, Connecticut, 06051.
