Francis Joseph Mallick
February 25, 1941 – April 17, 2025
Francis “Fran” Joseph Mallick, a cherished father, brother, athlete, husband and friend, passed away
peacefully on Thursday, April 17, 2025, after a vibrant and fulfilling life. Born on February 25, 1941, in
Herbert, Pennsylvania (Redstone Township), he was the son of the late George Mallick and Elizabeth
(Chuey) Mallick. Fran was raised in Port Vue and McKeesport, PA, alongside his beloved brothers:
George and Robert Mallick, both of whom predeceased him, and his surviving brother, Thomas Mallick,
and his wife, Diane; in addition to many nieces and nephews.
A proud graduate of Glassport High School’s Class of 1958, Fran excelled as captain of both the baseball
and basketball teams, igniting a lifelong passion for sports and leadership. In recognition of his
exceptional athletic career and impact on the community, Fran was inducted into the Glassport Sports
Hall of Fame in 2021—an honor that celebrated his enduring legacy.
In January 1961, Fran answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Air Force as
an airman second class and fuel specialist. Stationed in England, he discovered his love for football,
playing on the service team—a passion that would define the next chapter of his life. Upon his honorable
discharge in 1965, Fran’s talent and determination led him to the pinnacle of professional sports: the
National Football League (NFL). Despite never having played high school football, he joined the
Pittsburgh Steelers in 1965 as a defensive lineman, donning jersey numbers 61 and 74. His stellar
performance earned him a Pro Bowl selection and the distinction of First Team AP All-Pro.
Fran continued his football career as Captain of the Hartford Charter Oaks and the Hartford Knights from
1967 to 1970, earning MVP honors three consecutive years (1968–1970). His natural leadership and
fierce work ethic made him a standout athlete in every league he joined.
Following a career-ending knee injury, Fran transitioned seamlessly into civilian life in Connecticut. He
worked proudly for over two decades with Iron Workers Local 15 and served part-time with the Newington
Police Department. His entrepreneurial spirit later inspired him to start a successful limousine service,
which took him across the country.
Fran married the love of his life, Paula M. Telesca, in 1968. Together, they built a life rich in love, laughter,
and adventure. A longtime resident of both Newington, CT and Celebration, FL, Fran cherished the
friendships and community bonds he formed in both places.
Beyond his athletic and professional achievements, Fran was a man of faith and service. He was a proud
member of the Knights of Columbus during the 1970s and 1980s, dedicating himself to his community
through acts of fellowship and generosity.
Fran’s hobbies reflected his endless curiosity and zest for life. A lifelong treasure hunter, he delighted in
frequenting flea markets and tag sales, both as a collector and vendor.
He was predeceased by his beloved son, Todd Mallick, and is survived by his devoted daughter, Debra
“Debbie” Mallick Manente, and her husband, Silvestro Manente, Jr., who lovingly cared for him in his final
years.
Fran’s strength, humor, and boundless spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He lived
boldly—whether on the football field, in his career, or with his family—and leaves behind a legacy of
resilience, joy, and love.
A celebration of Fran’s life will be held on Wednesday, May 7th beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Luddy – Peterson
Funeral Home, 205 South Main Street, New Britain, CT. All friends and family are welcome.
