Geraldine Tyson Obituary

Geraldine (Baker) Tyson transitioned peacefully on June 17, 2024. She was born on August 11, 1931, in Mead, West Virginia to the late Clarence William Baker and Mary Alice (Johnson) Baker. After graduating from Byrd Prillerman High School in Beckley, West Virginia she lived in New York City before relocating to Hartford, CT. While in Hartford, she met her husband Clay Tyson, Sr. She moved to New Britain in the late 50’s.

Geraldine’s profession was cooking. She worked in the dietary departments of many nursing homes in the New Britain area including Brittany Farms, Lexington Convalescent and Monsignor Bojnowski. After retiring from cooking, her passion became crossing the children at Northend Elementary School, where she was the crossing guard for 20 years.

Her favorite hobbies were reading and watching TV. It was nothing for her to read books and newspapers simultaneously, while watching TV. We always said that she should have been on Jeopardy, because she was extremely knowledgeable on any subject, past and present. Even in her 90’s, her mind was sharp. She loved the UCONN girls’ basketball and didn’t miss watching the games on TV. Geno always had an extra coach. Those of you who knew her knew that she was very independent, and she would speak her mind, sometimes with a few choice words. She had a great sense of humor and was known for making people laugh.

She never met a stranger.

She will be missed by her brother, Alphonso Baker of Providence, Rhode Island, three daughters Regina Myers of Waterbury, CT., Demetrich Evans (Love), and Cassandra Darden (Bennie), both of Charlotte, NC. and a son, Clay Tyson, Jr. of Torrington. CT. Two granddaughters, Sonseeahray Lash and Tamara Crosby-Williams (Eric); one grandson Samuel Myers, Jr (Joiana); twelve great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband, three brothers, Chester Baker, Clarence Baker, Jr. and Earl Baker; and two sisters, Juanita Morris and Anna Terry and a granddaughter, Shirelle Myers.

Special thanks to the staff of Hartford Healthcare Hospice. Her niece, Pansey Kennedy. We don’t know what we would have done without you. And, Rev. Jordan Boyd of Rockwell AME Zion Church in Charlotte, NC. Thank you for your spiritual guidance and support. For the many conversations you had with our mom, praying with her and for her, when she needed it most.

The family wishes to thank everyone for their prayers, love, and support. Cremation is arranged by the Kenney Luddy Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home from 6-8 pm on Tuesday, June 25th, 205 S Main Street, New Britain, Connecticut.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making donations to Hartford Healthcare Hospice, 1200 Silas Dean Hwy., 4th Floor, Wethersfield, CT. 06109 or Rockwell AME Zion Church, PO Box 26634, Charlotte, NC. 28221.
