Johnnie Hammie was born to the late Sanford and Catherine Hammie on July 11, 1951 in Oxford, NC. He departed this life peacefully on February 6, 2020 at Saint Raphael Hospital in New Haven, CT surrounded by his family whom he loved dearly.
Johnnie was the youngest of 6 children and an identical twin. He and his twin brother Lonnie were simply known amongst the family as “the twins”. They were inseparable and because they were identical, most people could only tell them apart by their personalities. Johnnie had a great sense of humor and was the talkative one, while Lonnie was the quiet, reserved one. Having lost both parents by the time he was 17 years old, he still went on to graduate from Mary Potter High School in Oxford, NC. The close-knit Hammie family was always there for him, and he was the true example of being raised by a village. Johnnie lived most of his adult life in New Haven, CT. However, for a short period, he returned to Oxford where he owned and operated a successful nightclub in partnership with his twin Lonnie, and a friend.
Along with his parents, Johnnie was also preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Wright. Johnnie leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Sherita Blue (Danny); brothers, Freeman Hammie (Carrie), Charles Hammie (Gloria), Ronnie Hammie, Lonnie Hammie and half sister Valerie Lyons; grandchildren, Capri Larrier, Madisyn Blue and Kayla Blue; and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Cornerstone Christian Center located at 349 Wheelers Farms Road in Milford, CT on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at 10:30 am.
