Michael “Mousy” Mauro, 86, of Southington passed away unexpectedly on Monday, February 15, 2021 at home. He was born on July 3rd, 1934 in Southington and was the beloved husband of Joanne (Zychowski) Mauro for 56 years. He is survived by his children Michael Mauro and Mark Mauro of Bristol, Debra Sullivan, and husband Kevin of Southington, his brothers Anthony (Pobo) Mauro and wife Dollie, and Joseph and wife Lois Mauro, both of Southington, and many special nieces and nephews. His greatest joys in life were his grandchildren; Michael James Mauro, Shane Sullivan, Rylee Mauro, and Casey Sullivan.
He was the son of the late Joseph and Jennie (Lorenzo) Mauro and was predeceased by three brothers, Dominic, Albert (Toot) and Angelo (Chile) Mauro and five sisters, Mary Testa, Evelyn Casale, Rose Casale, Edith Dinello, and Theresa MacKenzie.
Growing up on Liberty Street in a large Italian family, there was a bocce court in the backyard and a stocking ball game that was always to be found. This is when his love of sports began. Mousy graduated in 1953 and is considered one of the best athletes in SHS school history. His batting average of .567 still stands as the best in school history and has earned him spots in both the inaugural class of SHS Baseball Hall of Fame and the Sports Hall of Fame. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he spent time playing in the minor leagues. He continued to play bocce throughout his life and in 1983 became Bocce Champion at the United Nations.
After the minor leagues, he spent two years in the United States Armed Services and when he returned, worked as a Plumber/Pipefitter for Local 777, until his retirement in 1997. He always enjoyed spending time at the Sons of Italy Club where he loved playing cards, bocce and reminiscing with his friends. He was a devoted family man, treasuring every moment with them.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, February 27th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Church, 99 Bristol Street Southington. For online condolences and testimonials please visit https://www.luddyandpetersonfh.com/obituary/Michael-Mauro.
