Mona Booker Obituary

On January 1st 1935, a screech echoed around the hospital as Mona D. Darling, the
first New Year’s baby in Bangor, Maine rolled in, head-first with one foot on the gas, as
was her typical fashion. Born to Ralph and Doris Darling, she was a force of nature from
the start. She spent her early years running the Darling circus, and notoriously known
as the ringleader of her sisters, Donna and Sonya and cousin Noreen, brother Jack, and
many other assorted cousins.

At the age of 8, she met her eventual husband Roland Booker, Jr. whom she married
in 1951, leaving their families behind with just a single suitcase to run the roads and
start their own family. They had five children, Roland III (deceased), Julia, Alan, Sheila,
and Ivy; 13 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

She held various positions at companies throughout Maine and Connecticut,
noticeably assuming duties of “the boss” wherever she went, excelling in her skills along
the way. She had a love for real estate and was a house flipper before the term was
coined. Buying, selling, and renting houses and land across the countryside was her
passion. A talented seamstress, she could sew, quilt, and crochet anything. She was
known for gifting the most wonderful baby outfits and quilts for every occasion.
A party animal at heart, Mona or more famously known as Grama, thrived on keeping
people together. Traveling the country by car you could never guess where she and
Roland might pop up or who they might be visiting next. Adept at spotting the “fuzz”, she
was the captain of the car and took anyone she could convince to come along (usually
just Grandpa, and her family) on the road trip of a lifetime. She could give you accurate
route directions to just about any place or state and tell you all the best restaurants and
sites to stop along the way.

She planned numerous family reunions and gatherings fostered an environment that
allowed her family and their extended families to all have relationships to enjoy for years
to come. She left this world on December 20th, much like she lived her life, voicing her
opinions loudly and proudly until the very end. Hurricane Mona came to pass, leaving in
her wake people who will miss her for the rest of their lives and hope she rests
peacefully until we can see her again.
