Paula Tarutis Smart Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Paula Tarutis-Smart (née Prohorik), beloved sister, mother, grandmother, and friend, who passed away surrounded by family on December 9, 2024, at the age of 77. She was born on December 26, 1946, in Derby Connecticut, to the late Helen and Paul Prohorik. Paula attended and graduated from Ansonia High School and then Endicott College.

Paula is predeceased by her first husband, Robert Tarutis, and her second husband, Thomas Y. Smart. She is survived by her brother, Phillip Prohorik; her daughter Karyn, and Karyn’s partner Luke, along with the light of her life, granddaughter Braelyn; and her son Jonathan, his wife Emily, and their rescue dog, Cairo; and stepdaughter Sandi and her husband Pat.

Paula had a long and esteemed career as a social worker, but perhaps her most notable role was as the "concierge of convalescence." She became a trusted guide for countless individuals navigating the challenges of recovery and healing. With compassion, dedication, and a wealth of knowledge, Paula provided comfort and support to those in need, ensuring they were not only cared for but also empowered throughout their healing journeys.

Beyond her professional achievements, Paula was known for her incredible talent as a hostess and her knack for throwing unforgettable parties. Whether it was an intimate dinner or a festive gathering, Paula’s home was always filled with warmth, laughter, and delicious food. She had a special gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued, and her parties became legendary for their fun, vibrant atmosphere, and the genuine connections they fostered.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your local animal shelter, a cause close to Paula's heart.

In remembrance of Paula’s classic style, her favorites being Ralph Lauren and Talbots, the family asks that all who loved her wear stripes, a signature of her unique sense of fashion and flair. Quintessentially her.

Paula will be remembered for her love, kindness, and enduring legacy of making the world a better place. She touched countless lives, and her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
