Richard Spano Obituary

Richard "Coach" Spano, 80, of New Britain, CT, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2024 surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He was born on November 8, 1943, in New Britain, CT to the late Josephine (Gilberto) & Peter Spano.

Richard attended New Britain High School and after graduation enlisted in the United States Army serving from 1961 to 1964. Richard started Spano Construction in 1969. Over the last 50 years, he imparted his construction knowledge to his son and 3 grandsons, ensuring they carry on the trade for the rest of their lives.

In his leisure time, Richard enjoyed watching football and baseball, as well as listening to Frank Sinatra and 60's doowop music.

Richard, known fondly as "Coach," was the foundation of his family. He was the calming presence, the voice of reason, and the sense of security. His absence leaves an insurmountable void, as family was everything to him, evident in his everyday life.

He is survived by his wife Hannelore Spano of New Britain, his children Denise Torres of New Britain, Richard Spano and his wife Kim Nowak of Plainville, and Audrine Ellard of Southington. He also leaves behind six grandchildren, Richie Paladino, Gina Mckenzie, Matthew Paladino, Luis Santiago, Haley Spano, and Olivia Spano, along with 10 great-grandchildren and one on the way. Richard is also survived by his sister Angie Russo.

Richard was preceded in death by his mother Josephine Spano, father Peter Spano, brother Anthony Spano, and sisters Katherine Spano, Nancy Zocolli, and Florence "Joan" Dezi.

Services will be held at Luddy Cremation Services, 205 South Main St., New Britain, CT 06051, on Thursday, February 29, 2024. Calling hours are from 10am to 12pm, followed by a military burial in Middletown, CT.
