Walter Giger Jr Obituary

Walter Giger, Jr. was born on June 24, 1932 , in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to a Swiss-


American family, namely Walter Giger, Sr. of Brugg, Canton Aargau, Switzerland and


Vera Margaret Rueger of Brooklyn, New York. The family moved back to Switzerland


and returned to the United States in 1947.


Walter’s formal education ended with a PH.D. in Thermodynamics and Rate Processes


in the Mechanical Engineering Dept. of the University of Connecticut.


He was employed, in succession, By the General Electric Company (Plainville, CT),


the University of Connecticut, the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Dept.


of Agriculture (Beltsville, MD) and the University of Hartford.


In retirement he served for several years as the Coordinator for New England of the


Amateur Yacht Research Society of London, UK. He also expended considerable


effort to close the gap in his education by the study of philosophy and history.


He deeply appreciated the encouragement and support he received from his friends,


colleagues, teachers and employers. He highly valued the opportunity to learn from


his students.


He was married to May Giger (nee Foo).
